Speeding ... still VERY MUCH a Problem... A letter from a Resident & a Police Officer ...

I am a Gwinnett County Police Officer and work Evening Watch (3pm-1am) at Westside Precinct (Gwinnett Village/Norcross). On several occasions in the past few weeks, I have had to initiate traffic stops either on vehicles leaving Rivermoore Park or vehicles within Rivermoore Park. All of the traffic stops have taken place at or around 1:30 AM and most have involved teenaged drivers driving at a high rate of speed and ignoring traffic signs. I have yet to write a citation to any of my neighbors and have yet to contact any parents about the curfew violations and violations of the teens' provisional driver's licenses. I have gone to painful extremes to explain that I am stopping the vehicle for what I refer to as an "educational traffic stop".

On two occasions, I made contact with drivers who were obviously impaired and endured verbal abuse that I normally wouldn't accept without taking someone to Gwinnett County Jail. No more.

Recently, I was driving in my personal vehicle with my wife and three small children and was incessantly tailgated from Meadow Bluff Dr. all the way onto Moore Rd. When I pulled to the right at Crofton, the individual proceeded to flip me off and speed off. I have contacted the supervisors at Northside Precinct (as I did when it was reported to me that people were having packages stolen off of their porches) and made them aware of the driving habits of some of our neighbors.

I would like to suggest that we have more social activities within the neighborhood designed to help people become familiar with one another. I, also, would gladly offer my services as a police officer to those who feel they need that type of service or guidance to help support a more neighborly feel here. I am a big proponent of the idea of neighborhood being as close to family as it could be and I do not get that feeling here right now, but I know there are good people who live here.

From the Board - A "Street Safety" committee called S.O.S. (Safety Over Speed) has formed to investigate solutions for our neighborhood.  Contact Jennifer Farine if you would like to participate.  Our resident officer makes a good point - if we thought of our neighbors as "family", we may consider their safety as more important that getting where we are going.
